I’ve always had this idea of developing an app which supports a social cause, apart from encouraging my kids to improve their Geographical knowledge. Imagine my surprise when I heard from one of my friends, who is an app developer, that there is already an app that does just the same!
That was how I got to know about GeoWiz. I downloaded it right away, eager to explore all that it offered. I was amazed to see a whole lot exciting and interesting features. The games provide information about the world and also have that element of fun which kids look for.
The app has twelve games. There are three playing modes which consist of four challenges each. I played all the games and scored my first high score. You can even challenge your friends using the integrated Game Center and Open Feint. I was trying to score as much as possible to get the highest score than my kids, but my son did not have the patience to watch me play for so long!
The ‘Alpha’ option is helpful in finding details about a country and the ‘Atlas’ option can be used to locate it. You can spread the buzz about Geowiz using the ‘Tell a friend’ option. Using the app you could also send in your suggestions to the developer, if you have any. By purchasing this app, I also got the satisfaction of having contributed towards the cause of education. You can choose the booster club in your own city or in a city nearby. You even have the option of adding one that hasn’t been listed. Half of the app’s cost will be going to that booster club to raise funds for education.
The user interface could have been made more attractive & colorful as the app is targeted at kids. I was also unable to locate the photo album that could be used to add images for kids’ projects.
Though I have come across many apps that have Geography quizzes, this was the one which has the most innovative ways to help kids in learning and to reach out to educational institutions.
On the whole it’s a good package of games and I recommend this app to parents, who want their kids to improve their knowledge of countries, capitals, flags etc, and also to teachers, who can use this app to motivate kids to learn more about the fascinating world we live in & also want to donate for a educational cause.
